Installing Decking in Your Garden

Adding decking onto your property is a great way to increase your house value without altering the internals of your home. An outdoor project creates less disturbance to day-to-day life and can be much more affordable than adapting the interior of your house.

If in doubt, hire a professional

At JL properties, we would always recommend that you hire a professional company to construct your decking as the process requires a lot of materials and tools for construction, and decking can be very tricky for a novice to construct. While installing a DIY decking may have fewer initial costs, the end product can be very lack-lustre and will not be as aesthetically pleasing or structurally sound as a professional installation. However, if you are interested in knowing more about the process of building and installing decking, we’ve compiled this short guide.

Supplies:

  • Weed control fabric
  • Wood for the frame (150mm x 50mm section timber is commonly suitable)
  • Decking screws (50mm, number-8)
  • Nails (100mm)
  • Wood preserver
  • Wood for stakes (25mm x 50mm)
  • Decking
  • Concrete slabs
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Spirit level
  • Screwdriver
  • Workbench
  • Gloves
  • Saw
  • Pegs
  • String

Method:

  • Plan the size and layout of your decking, marking the area with pegs and string
  • Clear any vegetation and remove turf
  • Level off the ground
  • Lay down weed control fabric
  • Lay concrete slabs evenly in the space, focusing on the corners and centre
  • Form an outer frame and screw together
  • Fill out the framework with joists, spaced at about 400mm intervals and fitted at right angles to the direction the deck boards will be facing
  • Measure and cut short deck boards and fix into the joists at right angles
  • Treat the wood with timber preservative
  • Lay the decking

Variations

Whilst this is the basic methodology behind laying a decking, it is not a complete guide. There are variations to consider, for example, if you are attaching your decking to your home you will need to install a joist to your masonry for structural support and, instead of laying flat, your decking will need to gently slope away from the house. You must also consider the conditions your decking will be placed on – are there any cables or pipes underneath that you might be blocking access to? Is there enough drainage? There are a number of considerations which must be made before you choose to install  DIY decking, so why not take advantage of JL Properties free quotation and consultation service to see how easy we can make the installation process?
